Short, step-by-step answers for installing, updating and fixing Fox Music.

Install Fox Music on Windows

  1. Download the Windows installer from the download section.
  2. Open it. If Windows shows SmartScreen, click More info, then Run anyway. The installer is not code-signed yet; the SHA-256 on the download card lets you check the file.
  3. Follow the setup wizard. yt-dlp is set up on the first start.

Install Fox Music on Android

  1. Download the APK from the download section.
  2. Open the file and allow Install unknown apps for your browser when Android asks.
  3. Coming from Fox Music 1.13 or older? Uninstall the old app once first, because the new version uses a new signing key. Later updates install over it.

Update Fox Music

  1. On Windows and Android (version 1.14 and newer), Fox Music looks for a new version a few seconds after it opens, at most once a day. A card says Update available.
  2. Press Download update to open the download, Later to hide the card, or Skip this version to stop hearing about it.
  3. You can also open About and press Check for updates at any time.

Move your library to a new computer

  1. On the old computer open Settings → Library and press Save backup file.
  2. Install Fox Music on the new computer and open Settings → Library → Restore from file.
  3. Songs that are files are saved as links, so copy your music folder to the new computer too.

Use your phone as a remote

  1. On the desktop app open Settings → Connections and switch on Phone remote.
  2. Scan the QR code with your phone camera. Both devices must be on the same Wi-Fi.
  3. Control play, queue, search, like and the sleep timer from the phone. The link has a secret key, so only people who have it can use it.

Music stops when the screen is off (Android)

  1. Open Settings → Background play in Fox Music and choose Allow.
  2. In your phone’s settings set the battery option for Fox Music to No restrictions. Some phones have extra battery savers that need this.

YouTube says “confirm you’re not a bot”

  1. This is YouTube refusing your internet connection for a while. It is not a fault in the app.
  2. Wait a little. Fox Music pauses its background work so the block does not get longer.
  3. Try another network, for example your phone’s hotspot, or turn off a VPN, then play the song again.

Mini player and sleep timer

  1. Click the picture-in-picture button at the top of the Windows or Mac app to open the mini player. Use the maximise icon on it to go back.
  2. Press T (or open the Tools menu) for the sleep timer: stop after minutes, a song, N songs or the end of the queue, with a gentle fade.

Report a bug or suggest a feature

  1. Open the feedback page.
  2. Choose bug, suggestion or question, write what happened and your app version (Settings → About), and send it.

Quick questions

Where do my downloads go?

Into Music / Fox Music on your device, and straight into Library, Local files in the app so you can play them offline.

Are plugins safe?

Each plugin runs in its own locked box and can only do what it asked for, which you see before installing. A plugin is still someone else’s code, so install plugins only from people you trust.
